0452 Annas {an'-nas}
of Hebrew origin [2608]; TDNT - omitted,omitted; n pr m
AV - Annas (4)
1) Annas meaning "humble", the son of one Seth, was appointed
high-priest in the year A.D. 7 by Quirinus, the imperial
governor of Syria; but was obliged by Valerius Gratus,
procurator of Judaea, to give way to Ishmael, son of Phabi, at
the beginning of the reign of Tiberius, A.D. 14. Ishmael was
succeeded by Eleazar, son of Annas; then followed, after one
year, Simon, son of Camithus, and then, after another year
(about 25 A.D.), Joseph Caiaphas, son-in-law of Annas (Jn
18:13). But in Luke 3:2, Annas and Caiaphas are both called
high-priest, Annas being mentioned first. Our Lord's first
hearing (Jn 18:13) was before Annas, who then sent him to
Caiaphas. In Acts 4:6, Annas is plainly called high-priest,
and Caiaphas merely named with others of his family. Some
maintain that the two, Annas and Caiaphas, were together at
the head of the Jewish people, - Caiaphas as actual
high-priest, Annas as president of the Sanhedrin. Others again
suppose that Annas held the office of sagan, or substitute of
the high-priest. He lived to an old age, having had five sons
high-priests.
